About Me
During my undergraduate work at Indiana University, I studied and earned a minor in Spanish while in Salamanca, Spain. After graduating with BA degrees in psychology and sociology, I went to work with the United States Peace Corps in El Salvador for nearly 3 years. Shortly thereafter, I realized that teaching and working with children was my true passion which led me to San Diego Unified. While teaching with SDUSD, since 2005, I earned my MA. degree in Education from National University. I have mostly taught in upper elementary grades and enjoy guiding students in the transition from elementary to middle school. During breaks, my family and I enjoy camping, going to the beach, traveling, gardening, and listening to music.
Instructional Program, Focus, & Goals
Being a part of a dual-language school is very important to me, as I have seen firsthand how important communication and literacy in a second language can be as a tool for success and a bridge between cultures. In our program, students have the chance to integrate literacy skills from both English & Spanish across all curriculum areas, with a goal of becoming a well-educated and collaborative citizen of the world. One of my favorite quotes from Mahatma Gandhi states: "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." I truly believe that learning a second language is the catalyst and feel fortunate to be a part in our students' journeys to make that change.
